Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is a health care profession devoted to developing, maintaining, and restoring maximum movement and functional ability throughout a person's life. Physiotherapists are university-educated specialists focused on evaluating and restoring physical function and body performance. With a detailed knowledge of the human body, physiotherapists understand the factors, such as poor posture, muscle imbalance, and altered body mechanics, that predispose people to injury. Physiotherapists offer expertise in improving joint mobility, muscle strength, endurance and balance, and in developing specialized exercise programs. Physiotherapists can help to identify the causes of injury or decreased function that can affect performance, offer advice on rehabilitation programs, and use treatment modalities (TENS, hot/cold therapy, ultrasound) to enhance recovery.
Physiotherapy is effective in the treatment of:
- Athletic injuries
- Strain/sprain/muscle spasm
- Post-surgical conditions (e.g., fractures, joint replacement, ligament repair)
- Back and neck pain (e.g., disc injuries, whiplash)
- Tendonitis/bursitis
- Chronic injuries (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome, patello-femoral syndrome)
- Repetitive strain and overuse injuries (e.g., rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow)
- Nerve injuries/damage
