Our Story

Ed has been a Massage Therapist for most of his life, though he didn’t always know it. What started out as a desire to assist people to lead healthy, active lives has become a 21-year career.

It all started back in 1995 when Edward Tonus (Massage Therapist and Owner of Active Healing Centre) began his career. During that time, he gained valuable knowledge and experience. This experience would later yield a passion for an ambitious future.

After a decade working for other health practitioners, Ed fulfilled his dream of opening his own clinic in 2008.

Active Healing Centre, in the The Beaches neighbourhood of East Toronto, has become a well-respected centre for healing and health care, and has received multiple awards. In 2015, Ed was recognized as one of the Top Ten Massage Therapists in Toronto.

The therapists at Active Healing Centre have been carefully selected, are patient-focussed, and are continually incorporating new techniques and treatments that enhance a patient’s health and well-being.

Each treatment is unique and designed specifically for the patient. It’s what makes us stand out from the rest. We focus on your total health, and provide services and information to make you feel energized, healthy, and free of pain.

If you’re looking for a clinic committed to helping you achieve your very best, you’ve found it! Why not come in for a treatment, and see for yourself why our patients value our therapies.

We could continue but why not come in and see for yourself.

Our Healthcare Practitioners

Edward Tonus, RMT

Edward TonusBusiness owner and massage therapist for over 20 years, Edward Tonus has received many awards during his career. Ed is thorough, effective and has built a reputation for getting results.

Ed is extremely professional and engaging at the same time. Unlike many other massage therapists, he will work on an area until he is satisfied — every massage is personalized to what you need.  He respects your right to a quiet treatment.

Whether it is a relaxation massage or a massage to treat an injury, his massages work.

Ed’s list of accomplishments, include:

  • In 2015, Ed was recognized as one of the Top Ten Massage Therapists in Toronto, by Crowd Wellness
  • Ed was voted BEST Massage Therapist in The Beach, by The Beach-Riverdale Mirror
  • Ed has been featured on The New VR, performing chair massage
  • He has been featured on CBC, performing baby massage
  • He has taught workshops in couples massage therapy

A lifetime of involvement in sports helped Ed understand how the body functions, what happens when injuries occur, and how to recover. He supplements all treatments with information on stretching and strength exercises, since his focus is on your health.

In his spare time, you may find Ed running the trails (as he slowly gets back into shape), riding the bike paths or playing hockey.

Ed has also taken up singing in a choir, and has had the opportunity to sing in some incredible venues: Koerner Hall, ACC, Carnegie Hall. During the day, you might hear Ed practicing his notes. Just don’t ask him to serenade you.

Ed attended Kikkawa College, and is a member in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario.

As a longtime member of the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario (RMTAO), Ed was awarded by the Association’s Board of Directors a Lifetime Membership in recognition of his dedication to his profession and his professional association.
